CLX / P90X Hybrid: Day 2 and 3

Day 2
My friend Alissa posted about her recent Jillian Michaels workout and it got me interested. I hate to say it but I'm a fan of Jillian's and her 30 Day Shred and Biggest Winner Series dvd's got me started on my weight-loss journey - and notice I use Jillian's workouts, not the Biggest Loser workouts cause to me there's a big difference! Anyway, I bought her newest workout dvd's months ago but never even touched them yet so when Alissa (another P90xer) posted that she got a killer workout from it, I had to try it.

So I sampled Jillian's Banish Fat Boost Metabolism dvd for my cardio day 2 workout.... and I.T. W.A.S. T.O.U.G.H. It was a little too plyometric-y for me - only because I have plyo today - but other than that I liked it! Jillian and her team move a little too slow for me but I got a killer workout when I follow their exercises but speed up the tempo.

Day 3
Today is day three and I had my plyo session with my PT. My legs were still sore from yesterday's Jillian dvd but moving around and getting the blood flowing again really made a difference and right now my legs feel good! Here's a brief run down of what my 60-minute PT sessions consists of:
  • core work on a stability ball
  • plyo and agility circuit
  • plyo circuit
  • plyo and agility circuit
  • plyo circuit
  • lateral delt raise/fly with core work
If you're unfamiliar with plyometrics here is a good list - with animation! - on several different lower body and upper body plyo exercises. It's not recommended that beginners do plyo because proper landing and jumping require more than just the muscles used to propel you. You're balance and stabilization muscles need to be strong too. I've been working on plyo for almost a year now but when I started, it was really hard on my joints. I just did what I could but never pushed myself too far. Now that I've been working with my PT for the last 6 months, it's made me a lot more confident in what I think and know I can handle.

With any new exercise program it's a good idea to check with your doctor or a professional in the industry to make sure you'll benefit from the exercise rather than injure yourself.

Another challenge!! Am I CRAZY?!

No... not crazy... but damned determined!!

This past Tuesday was my last personal trainer session until October 23 - my PT is getting married and going on vacation for 3 weeks! And since I only see him on Tuesdays and Fridays, to me he's actually going to be gone for a month... 30 days EXACTLY!

So I'm proposing a challenge to myself:

30-day "Surprise-the-PT-when-he-gets-back" Challenge!
or the 30-day Surprise PT Challenge for short.

What is the Challenge: Technically, this 30-day challenge started on Wednesday, the 23rd (I'm only writing about it now), but for the next 30 days I will be personal-trainer-free so I wanted to take this opportunity to change up my workout and try new healthy recipes. And of course lose some weight while I'm at it!

Why am I doing it: For the last 4 months I've done most of my exercise at the gym and it's been the same thing every week...
Cardio on Monday.
Personal trainer on Tuesday.
Cardio on Wednesday.
Off on Thursday.
Personal trainer on Friday.
Cardio on Saturday.
Cardio and weights on Sunday.

It's about time for a change, don't you think?

Plus, with the accountability of a personal trainer and having scheduled sessions, I feel like I've lost a little of my own accountability and motivation so I wanna get that back! Eating right and exercising are ways of life for me, but recently I feel like I've been in a rut... just putting in the hours at the gym because I'm suppose to, eating oatmeal and fruit because I'm suppose to, drinking a ton of water because I'm suppose to. I want to enjoy eating healthy and working out again.

When does it happen: This challenge started Wednesday, Sept. 23 and will run exactly 30 days until Thursday, Oct. 22.

How will I do it: Do workouts that I haven't done in a R.E.A.L.L.Y. long time and try new recipes every week. As far as exercise, here are some of my weapons of choice:

For strength training I'm gonna rotate through a 5-day split and switch between P90X workouts and Jillian Michaels' "The Biggest Winner" series.

For cardio, I'm gonna get in more runs outside (not on the treadmill) and I'm gonna start running stairs again. If/when I go to the gym I'll rotate between machines I don't normally use, like the bike and rowing machine.

Goals for the challenge:
  • cardio miles: at least 3 miles/day, 6 days/week = 78 miles
  • weight train: 3 days/week = 15 days
  • calories: stay between 1300 - 1600
  • water: at least 72 oz/day = 2160 oz.
  • weight: lose 6+ lbs. = -1.5 lbs./week

What I have done up to this point

I started losing weight back in September of 2008 by changing the way I eat and adding in exercise. This post will be a quick recap of what I have done since then to accomplish my current weight-loss status:

Sept. '08-Oct. '08 - When I made the decision to get fit again, the very first thing I did was look for a good workout dvd. I knew I wouldn't be comfortable going to a gym so I researched a bit and decided on Jillian Michaels' "30 Day Shred" dvd. I also bought an elliptical and these two items were the first steps for me. As far as diet, MFD really put my eating habits into perspective and I learned how to choose healthier items to eat. Since I wanted this to be a life change, I took things one at a time... worked on increasing my water intake and when I could do that daily without even thinking about it, I moved on to something else like adding a fruit or veggie in at every meal. I worked slowly and one change at a time because I wanted to make these changes permanent and last a lifetime.

Nov. '08-Jan. '09 - The HOLIDAY SEASON!!!! During these months, my boyfriend and I decided to make hiking a weekly thing and we've kept it up even to today. I was still continuing with "30 Day Shred" and the elliptical and actually bought another one of Jillian's sets, "The Biggest Winner" series and was rotating through the dvd's three to four times a week. In Nov. my boyfriend and I signed up for our first 13K, The Great Aloha Run, so we also started to run. I used a modified version of the "Learn to Run" program to get me going and it worked out great. I also bought the Beach Body workout program P90X but didn't start it because I wanted to lose a little more weight first. Diet wise I was still making my little changes and incorporating a lot more whole and clean foods and cutting out all fast-food. Now I was also using a food scale and measuring cups for all the food I ate. I know most people hate doing this, but if was neccessary for me so I could learn portion control. At the end of these three months, I was down 20 lbs. from when I started. **First time I have ever lost weight during the holiday season!**

Feb. '09-today - February 16 was the date of the 13K and we ran and complete it in 1:45 minutes... 13 minute miles which isn't bad at all! In Feb. I also started a different Beach Body program, ChaLean Extreme (CLX). I bought this one and used this before P90X because CLX is geared as a weight-loss program, where P90X is not. I am currently in my last month of CLX and totally love this program because of the results that I have gotten (check out my review in a future post), but I can't wait to start P90X! Scheduled start date is May 7, 2009. I also decided to try the "100 Push-Up Challenge" and I am on my last week of that, but no where near reaching 100 push ups. I can currently do 23 standard push-ups (standard TOE push-ups! No girlie push-ups for me!) which is a huge difference from the 5 that I could do when I started the program. I'm still continuing with weekly runs and hikes. Diet wise I have changed it up and I am trying to follow a 40 carb/30 protein/20 fat ratio diet. Incorporating a lot more lean protein and cutting out some of the carbs has given me more energy and I really like that.

Of course my journey so far has been much more than I have written but this was a brief description of where I have come from in the last 7 months. I've had to deal with a lot of people who think I'm crazy for trying to lose 55+ lbs., either because they don't think I can do it or because they don't think it's possible, but these are the people who push me to strive for more. I am a huge competitor and I am stubborn so I feed off of comments like these. On the flip side, there have been so many other people who praise me and think it's absolutely wonderful that I can do this. I've even had people call me an inspiration because they see me as proof that "normal" people can lose weight.
