Can I get a fatter version of P90X please

Yesterday I threw in P90X+ Intervals and I proved to myself that my mind is stronger than my body... and not in a good way. For those who don't know, the P90X+ Interval routine is made up of 15 cardio/strength/plyo moves that have three 20-second speeds: slow, medium, and killer.

So I'm going through the routine but towards the middle of the dvd, I realize I'm stopping about half-way through the last killer 20 seconds not because I'm wasted and exhausted, but because my mind tells me I can't do it.

I see Tony and his two assistance - one of which is a skinny chick with killer abs - and it's just intimidating to me. I never realized this before. Then it starts getting into my head:
I can't keep up with them, they're so fit!
And I'm not.
If they get winded, I should be lying on the floor passed out because they're so fit!
And I'm not.
If it's hard for them, I can't possible finish cause they're so fit!
And I'm not.

Uhh... can I get the P90X with fat people in it so I know I have a better chance of keeping up?

Over and over for each exercise. And seriously I would stop just because my mind thought I couldn't do it not because I physically couldn't do it. The weird thing is this doesn't happen to me when I do P90X plyo and to me that's a much harder workout. Maybe it's because the girl in the plyo dvd doesn't look that intimidating... she's not fat by any definition, but she has more muscle and meat on her bones so I feel I can keep up with her better... she doesn't have that "perfect" fitness model look. I don't know what it is, just an interesting thing I noticed.

Rant and self-pity party over!

CLX/P90X Hybrid and stats

Wow where did the time go...

Time for a CLX/P90X Hybrid update (although I'm thinking of changing the name to just P90X because I haven't touched a CLX workout in almost a month!).

First, my super-late-30-day stat update! I can't believe I took all my measurements back on the 11th but totally forgot to post them here. Be warned, the weight is up, the inches are up and down, but I've increased in the right areas as far as strength:

Best workout E.V.E.R!

So why was my workout today the best E.V.E.R?

Because I got it done!

No seriously!

All day long I had P90X on the brain because at my Tuesday PT session, we did heavy weights instead of plyo so I was craving more. I knew exactly what I wanted to do before lunch time even came around:
P90X Chest, Shoulders, and Tris + ARX.

I loves me a good upper body workout and knew CST would do it!

But this is what happened when I got home:

5:00 - got home and played with the dog a bit
5:30 - threw on my workout clothes and put in P90X
5:35 - fast-forwarded through the entire dvd to get reacquainted with Tony
5:37 - fell asleep
5:58 - woke up
5:59 - said SCREW IT! and changed out of my workout clothes
6:00 - watched two episodes of 'Friends' (love that show!)
6:50 - said SCREW IT! again and threw on my workout clothes
6:52 - HIT PLAY!
8:10 - jumped on the elliptical for even MORE exercise

So that's why it was my best workout ever. I rarely get the motivation to workout once I don't wanna do it but not today! I've been so on-track with exercise, eating, calories in and calories out that I was crazy to NOT wanna workout. YAY ME!

CLX/P90X Hybrid: Day 4 and 5

Day 4: Rest Day

Day 5:

So what the hell is CLX and P90X?

Well, they're two of the best 90-day workout programs I've come across!
(Again, I am not a Beachbody Coach and I do NOT receive any type of compensation for talking about Beachbody products!)

ChaLean Extreme (CLX) and Power 90 Extreme (P90X) are both weight-lifting programs that focus on the idea that muscle is the fountain of youth for everyone and lifting heavy to build muscle burns calories/fat. They both have you lifting heavy weights (if you plan on using pink barbie dumbbells, think again) in the range of 10 lbs. - 50 lbs. which brings me to my next point: you need some serious resistance to use these programs! Any form of resistance, bands or weights, will work for each program. I use a set of PowerBlocks that go up to 25# and even that's too little bit for my lower body.

Although they're both similar in the area of building muscle, this is where they're different also. CLX is geared towards weight-loss where P90X is not. Let me repeat that. P90X is not a weight-loss program, but that doesn't mean you won't see results if you need to lose a few pounds. To see results from P90X you can NOT be in a calorie deficit. Building muscle requires a person to eat a little more than maintenance so being on a restricted-calorie diet is counter productive. BUT, if you think about it, eating at maintenance of what your healthy body weight should be, not currently what it is, should still let you lose weight and gain muscle. Does that make sense?

For example, right now I weigh 136. The healthy body weight for my height is actually 115 lbs. - I'm short! IF my level of exercise stayed the same:

eating 2000 cals = maintenance at 136 lbs.
eating 1600 cals = maintenance at 125 lbs.
eating 1400 cals = maintenance at 115 lbs.

So eating at 1600 cals is actually above my maintenance of 115 lbs. but it'll still let me lose 10 lbs. from my current weight of 136. Anyway, P90X suggest 1600 calories be the MINIMUM calorie intake for women on the program simply because you need to fuel your body with enough energy... especially when you're doing the extreme workouts designed in the program.

On the other hand, the CLX workouts are a lot shorter in length, aren't as 'extreme' as P90X, and it does allow a lower calorie intake, therefore it is advertised as a weight-loss program. But be warned that you may lose more inches than pounds so be sure to take measurements/pictures to judge your progress. Remember the scale is a filthy, no good liar sometimes! Here's a run-down of the two programs:

ChaLean Extreme:

(source)

Level of fitness: Beginner to Advance
Even though you're lifting heavy weights and form is really important, Chalene Johnson (the creator of Turbo Jam), takes a lot of time focusing on what proper form is - P90X doesn't spend too much time with this. According to the CLX official website, the program's main focus is to bust the myth that cardio will help you loose the most weight. MUSCLE BURNS FAT! Plain and simple.

The CLX program has you working out 5 days/week: 3 days lifting, one day cardio/ab work, and one day stretch/yoga. Each dvd runs about 30 - 45 minutes long so it's easy to get in extra cardio after your workouts. For me personally, I throw in an extra day of cardio to make my exercise week a 6-day week, I play the dvd's twice so the workouts come out to an hour long and I add ab work on three days instead of just one. The CLX weight-lifting workouts do incorporate ab work throughout the exercises, but I prefer a solid, straight-through type of ab work.

First 30 days:
  • Burn Phase - lift range 10 - 12 reps; combination exercise that combines lower/upper body
Second 30 days:
  • Push Phase - lift range 6 - 8 reps; isolated exercise that target one body part
Last 30 days:
  • Lean Phase - lift range 10 - 12 reps; dynamic exercise that combines lower/upper body and balance
(If you notice the rep range, you want your muscle to be tired and at failure by the designated amounts. None of this light weights and a million reps thinking. We want to build lean muscle, not just build muscle endurance, right?)

Power 90 Extreme:

Level of fitness: varies (see below)
P90X isn't advertised as a beginners program and I think that's correct. You are lifting a considerable amount of weight and without proper form, you could really injure yourself. P90X was the reason why I took up a personal trainer in the first place, to learn to get proper form, but I obviously stayed longer since I love my trainings. Anyway, P90X also incorporates plyometric moves which are not exercises for the beginner. Although most of the exercises can be modified for a beginner, I wouldn't recommend someone just starting out on their fitness journey to pick this up. It is an EXTREME workout.

During the 90-day program, you work all the major muscle groups of your body and the main focus of P90X is muscle confusion, which the program follows by changing up the exercises and introducing new moves into the mix every 30 days. This keeps your body guessing so you never plateau. The program has you pushing play 6 days/week and each workout runs about 60 minutes (except for yoga which is 90 minutes!). There are three versions of the program that you can do:
Classic
  • 3 days lifting and ab work, 1 day plyometrics, 1 day yoga, 1 day cardio/kenpo
Doubles
  • same as Classic but with 3 extra cardio sessions done in the morning on the 3 lifting days
Lean (more cardio based)
  • 2 days lifting and ab work, 2 days cardio/kenpo, 1 day yoga, 1 day core work
So there you have it... a brief description of what each program is like. Both CLX and P90X come with a fitness guide and a nutrition guide with meal plans and menus. Don't forget, nutrition is 80% of the results!!!

CLX/P90X Hybrid: Day 1

Had a very early day today but still got in my workout!

This evening I started my ChaLean Extreme (CLX) and Power 90 Extreme (P90X) hybrid and it felt so good! I started out with CLX Burn Circuit 1 and ended my workout with Ab Ripper X (ARX - so many abbreviations, right?!) and all I can say is I forgot what a beast ARX is! I hate it and love it. Even though it's only 15 minutes long, you combine over 300 core workouts in those L-O-N-G 15 minutes and they hurt! On the recommendation of my trainer, I'm only doing 12 reps of each exercise in ARX instead of the 25 you're suppose to do. Mostly because the CLX workouts all combine ab work with each strength move. Think push-ups with leg lifts, lunges with core rotation, sumo squats with hip lifts and bench presses with leg lift/lower.

I totally forgot what a good workout I can get at home.

And this is important because some people think you can only get in shape with a gym membership and that's so not true! I love the gym but not because I think that's the only way to get in shape. Anyway, here are my starting stats:

After looking over my first round of CLX stats, I can't be disappointed with how far I've come. Just gotta keep reminding myself that this is a marathon, not a sprint.

On a side note, I'm planning on doing a write up of CLX and P90X because I've been getting a lot of questions about the program, but please keep in mind that I do not sell/earn money from any of these programs. I'm just a very satisfied customer.

Not saying goodbye yet...

So remember the other day I was thinking about what to do about my personal trainer sessions? Well I've decided to get more.

And yes, it does cost about $1200 for 20 sessions which breaks down to $60/session (he's also a certified dietitian), but these 20 sessions will last me about half a year. I'm planning on seeing him only once a week but I know it's a good investment. My PT gives me a different kind of motivation and I noticed he makes me push myself more than I would just on my own.

Anyway, so that's the plan! I'm excited to start working out on my own again, as far as lifting, and will be starting this weekend!! My P90X/CLX hybrid is going to be so much fun and this is what I plan to do:
  • CLX weight workouts
  • P90X Ab Ripper X workout
  • P90X Stretch X
  • P90X Yoga X
  • P90X/CLX cardio workouts
  • plyo workouts with my PT
  • extra cardio on my own
If you're unfamiliar with either P90X or CLX, read more about them here. Anyway, I'll be following the CLX 3x/week weight-lifting workout schedule but since the workouts are only 35 - 45 minutes, I'm doing each workout twice in a row which comes out to about 60 mins a day (minus the warm-up/cool down from one round). Throw on P90X Ab Ripper X (ARX) after that and that's a decent worktout!

So three days of weights and ab work. One day a week will be plyo, one day reserved strictly for cardio, one day for P90X Stretch X/Yoga X and one OFF day. Of course if/when I can, I'll be adding on short cardio sessions here and there.

I'm sooooo ready to 'get extreme' and 'BRING IT'!!

If you're joining me, you better be too!

Leaving my PT and so EXCITED!

So what was my exciting news I was talking about yesterday? Well I'm done with my personal trainer! Finished!

Not in a bad way (I LOVE having a PT) but my second set of sessions will be done in two weeks... December 11th is the last session I have. Sad and I'm bummed but totally exciting about what I have planned next...

(source) (source)

That's right! I'm getting ready to "... get extreme" and "BRING IT" with a ChaLean Extreme (CLX) and P90X hybrid... I can't wait, I can't wait!!

Earlier this year I did both of these programs and stopped short of completing BOTH. WTH, right? I started CLX first but stopped two weeks short so I could start P90X. Then, I got so hooked on the "X" - sometimes doing doubles - that I burned out and stopped with about three weeks left. At the same time I got a gym membership and hired a PT so that kept me off the X even longer. Well not any more! December 13 is dooms day.
12 days and counting
(I tried to look for a countdown widget but couldn't find one. BOO!)

It's been such a long time since I've been excited about exercise I know this will pull me out of my funk. And it's perfect timing because I won't be at the gym when the rest of the world makes their New Year's resolutions.

Anyone care to join me on a 90-day challenge?! BRING IT!

Another challenge!! Am I CRAZY?!

No... not crazy... but damned determined!!

This past Tuesday was my last personal trainer session until October 23 - my PT is getting married and going on vacation for 3 weeks! And since I only see him on Tuesdays and Fridays, to me he's actually going to be gone for a month... 30 days EXACTLY!

So I'm proposing a challenge to myself:

30-day "Surprise-the-PT-when-he-gets-back" Challenge!
or the 30-day Surprise PT Challenge for short.

What is the Challenge: Technically, this 30-day challenge started on Wednesday, the 23rd (I'm only writing about it now), but for the next 30 days I will be personal-trainer-free so I wanted to take this opportunity to change up my workout and try new healthy recipes. And of course lose some weight while I'm at it!

Why am I doing it: For the last 4 months I've done most of my exercise at the gym and it's been the same thing every week...
Cardio on Monday.
Personal trainer on Tuesday.
Cardio on Wednesday.
Off on Thursday.
Personal trainer on Friday.
Cardio on Saturday.
Cardio and weights on Sunday.

It's about time for a change, don't you think?

Plus, with the accountability of a personal trainer and having scheduled sessions, I feel like I've lost a little of my own accountability and motivation so I wanna get that back! Eating right and exercising are ways of life for me, but recently I feel like I've been in a rut... just putting in the hours at the gym because I'm suppose to, eating oatmeal and fruit because I'm suppose to, drinking a ton of water because I'm suppose to. I want to enjoy eating healthy and working out again.

When does it happen: This challenge started Wednesday, Sept. 23 and will run exactly 30 days until Thursday, Oct. 22.

How will I do it: Do workouts that I haven't done in a R.E.A.L.L.Y. long time and try new recipes every week. As far as exercise, here are some of my weapons of choice:

For strength training I'm gonna rotate through a 5-day split and switch between P90X workouts and Jillian Michaels' "The Biggest Winner" series.

For cardio, I'm gonna get in more runs outside (not on the treadmill) and I'm gonna start running stairs again. If/when I go to the gym I'll rotate between machines I don't normally use, like the bike and rowing machine.

Goals for the challenge:
  • cardio miles: at least 3 miles/day, 6 days/week = 78 miles
  • weight train: 3 days/week = 15 days
  • calories: stay between 1300 - 1600
  • water: at least 72 oz/day = 2160 oz.
  • weight: lose 6+ lbs. = -1.5 lbs./week

Hooray for BOOT CAMPS!!

Last night, against the advice of my PT, I did my first boot-camp style workout at the gym and LOVED it! (Side note: My PT didn't want me to do it because that doing the boot camp in-between my sessions with him would put me at three days of weight-training... he said it was "okay" but that I might be sore after and he is not going to take it easy on me when I see him later today... he's so nice!)

Anyway, yesterday about an hour before the "camp" started, I was so nervous... almost wanted to back out because I didn't know what to expect. I made my boyfriend and a couple of friends sign up for the camp with me so I would feel a little better.

Well, the minutes were counting down and when I got the basketball courts (this is where they set it up) I was surprised to see that there were only a handful of people there... 15 people max. We dived up into three groups but somehow the numbers were wrong because my group only had three people and one of the other groups had like 6 or 7 people. Anyway, in the court, there were three stations set up where we would be spending about 3-minutes at each station and rotate through the circuits. The first station was a plyo section (thank gawd for P90X!), second station was an agility/cardio area, and the last station was a strength station.

The first circuit consisted of:
plyo: 1 min of jumping squats, 1 min of rockstar jumps, 1 min of burpees
agility: 3 minutes of skaters (jumping for side-to-side in a low,
balanced stance)
strength: 1 min of squats, 1 min of lunges, 1 min of push-ups

Second circuit got a little harder:
plyo: kept the same 3 exercises... and those were hard enough
agility: 3 mins of ladder running
strength: 1 min 1-leg squats, 1 min sumo squats, 1 min of push-ups

Third circuit got even harder:
plyo: same 3 exercises
agility: 3 mins of faster ladder running/jumping
strength: 1 min jumping lunges, 1 min of open push-ups, 1 min jumping
1-leg toe touch

Last 15 minutes were spent on core work: crunches, bicycles, hip
raises, cobra/superman and boat hold.

So what was the best part of the boot camp... ME! (Warning: a little arrogance ahead!) Thanks to P90X, I could go through ALL three circuits without stopping. I could do the plyo moves but three minutes of non-stop plyo was hard so of course I threw in my own breaks. At the agility and strength stations, the trainers kept using me as an example for proper form and how to intensify the moves! For example, on the skaters it's just natural for me to only use one leg (vs. putting the back foot on the ground after the jump) and I wasn't even trying to do the harder version, but the trainer pointed out what I was doing and told the others "this is the advanced way". I was probably the "chubbiest" person there and to have the trainers notice my form/stamina/coordination felt so good! It was actually a little embarrassing.

Anyway it's good to know that I can hang with the "big dogs" at the gym... and even surpass some of them! BTW I was the last one standing in my group when circuit 3 came around... the one guy in my group dropped out after circuit 1 and the other girl in my group dropped out after circuit 2! :) Okay, I'll go deflate my head now!

Personal Trainer Sessions getting intense... me likey!

I had my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th PT sessions and L-O-V-E-D them all!

2nd session, June 10: So after taking off from ALL exercise for 5 days (on order from my PT), getting back in the gym felt so good! I was actually worried that I would get comfortable with not exercising, but I wasn't! How crazy is that?! Anyway, good to know my body craves being active now! So in my second session, I learned how to do more stretches and started the weight resistance training with 3 new, simple exercises:
1.) Swiss ball glute extension and arm raise
2.) Swiss ball crunch
3.) Dumbbell chest fly
The exercises this session were short and sweet because my PT wanted to go over the meal plan he made for me. It's following the lines of a 50/30/20 carb/protein/fat ratio but he said he'll probably change up the ratios after a couple of weeks. Because I was doing such a low carb diet before (I was sticking with P90X's fat burner meal plan) he wanted me to up my carbs for now. I'm still having trouble reaching the 2000 calories/day amount but have consistently been hitting 1650 - 1800.

3rd session, June 12: PT wants me to up my cardio to 3 - 5 days a week and I couldn't be happier! I love my cardio! This session was all weight resistance and we got through 6 exercises:
1.) Swiss ball crunch
2.) 1-leg toe touch
3.) cable chest fly
4.) Swiss ball glute extension and arm raise
5.) bent over arm raise hold - same thing as the chair pose from yoga
6.) dumbbell delt row
PT was super impressed with how long I could hold the chair pose and you know what I told him? It's all thanks to P90X!! Legs and Back and Yoga X already trained me for it! Nutrition wise still consistent with the 1650 - 1800 calorie range so need to bring that up but everything else is still great!

4th session, June 17: Yesterday was my 4th session... quarter of a way done with my sessions already... BOO!!! Today was more weight resistance training and PT is getting stricter and tougher but I love it! He's a major stickler for proper form and that is the main reason why I wanted a PT to make sure I'm getting the most out of my exercises and of course, to not get injured. Six exercises today:
1.) Swiss ball oblique crunch - this one burns!
2.) Flexibility squat
3.) cable chest press - my form is all over the place with this one. I tend to naturally do a chest fly instead of press
4.) standing cable row
5.) Swiss ball lower back and glute extension
6.) dumbbell delt fly
So after todays session, PT is really please with how well I'm doing as far as form and balance with all the exercises so he's going to move my sessions along a little quicker so I can start bringing some major intensity to my workouts. I see him again tomorrow so I can't wait to see what he has me doing.

Overall, the sessions so far have been great and I don't have any regrets about getting a PT... so much so that I think I'm going to save up so I can get more sessions after my 20 are over this time. I still cannot believe how much I love the gym! Don't get me wrong... I love working out at home by myself but the gym environment is a completely different vibe or energy. Getting to know the workers and some other members really keeps me motivated to do my best and being in an environment with other people who have the same goals as me really makes me push for the extra 15 minutes on the treadmill or the extra 2 or 3 reps. Like I said before... the competitive side of me loves having fitter, stronger, faster people around me when I workout because unconsciously it turns up my exercise intensity for my entire workout!

Saying good-bye to P90X... only for a little while!

So it looks like I will be postponing Phase 3 of P90X due to my Personal Trainer (PT) sessions. Hmmm... sounds like deja vu! Yes, yes... for those of you who are following me, I stopped CLX in the last phase also. Let me reassure you that I AM NOT A QUITTER! The next rounds of CLX and P90X will be completed... FOR SURE! This, I promise!!! But anyway, it's a pretty bitter-sweet goodbye for me because I love P90X, but on the other hand, I do want to take full advantage of my PT's routine and advice. And this isn't really a goodbye, more of a "see you later" to P90X... I'm sure I'm going to sneak in some of the cardio/yoga/stretch stuff into my routine, but Tony and "the kids" will be sadly missed!

So here's a recap of what my first PT session included:

It was mostly questions and letting my PT get a good sense of what I have been doing so far and where I want to go from here... things like what I've done so far, how often do I exercise now, what do I eat, what are my physical goals, what are my fitness goals, what are my nutrition/health goals, etc. It was pretty comprehensive (even asking about TOM to see if fitness/nutrition can help with any PMS). We took even more stats and measurements and went over my two-weeks worth of food journaling. I really liked it and know my money has been well spent. My PT really likes my level of exercise and nutrition knowledge, so he thinks we can move along much faster than most of his clients.

Didn't get around to much exercise, but he gave me a run down of what to expect for his program. He starts off all his clients (no matter what your fitness level) with stabilization stretching exercises for the first week. He introduced me to a foam roller and had me only roll my left leg: calf, quad, hamstring, and ITB. Then he had me perform a squat. It was amazing how different my left leg felt from my right leg... my left side felt completely stretched out and I could have definitely gone deeper into the squat if my right side wasn't tight. My PT had my roll out my right side after that. The next couple of days my leg muscles felt like I had a deep tissue massage! It felt so good!! Anyway, on his orders, I have taken this entire weekend, as well as up to today, off from exercise since I have been going non-stop for the last 9 months... well not non-stop per se because I do take at least one rest day a week, but I haven't taken more than 2 days off in row since I started exercising back in September. So he wants me to "reset" my body and give it a good rest until I meet with him again tomorrow. After the first week, my PT will introduce me to the cardio/weight training parts of the program... THIS is what I'm waiting for. It looks like he'll have me doing HIIT a couple times a week, some other cardio the other days, and weight training three times a week. I hope it's a good mix of machines/free weights/outdoor activities to really keep my body in "shock mode". Cross-training is the key for his program.

The diet part of the session was really good and I have to say... to all you P90Xer's who kept telling me to eat more... you guys are 100% right. He wants me to up my calories from 1500 to 1900 - 2100 calories a day. Seems like a lot of food but he's also devising a food plan for me to help me with that. I was really impressed with the fact that he wanted this program to be tailored to my needs and likes. I guess I went into this thinking most PT's want it their way or nothing. But he made a list of the foods that I want to incorporate into my diet and he couldn't be happier that I want to keep my diet clean. I can imagine most of his clients struggle with changing their diets the most.

Anyway, I see him again tomorrow and we're suppose to go around the gym and he'll assess my fitness level by evaluating my performance on different cardio machines as well as weight-resistance machines and free weights. As much as I hate putting P90X on hold, I think having a PT at this stage in my weight-loss battle is key and couldn't have come at a more perfect time. Joining a gym and having a PT has completely re-motivated me and is giving me the little extra push I needed to continue in the right direction. I'm very competitive by nature, so the gym setting is perfect! Can't let the "skinny" people out exercise me, you know?! And having someone who keeps me accountable and excited about exercise is the most important job for my PT... and not to mention that my sessions cost more than my monthly mortgage... but that alone is going to push me to take full advantage of my PT and follow his advice.

On a side note, this week was suppose to start Phase 3 of P90X (uhh... so close to finishing!) so I'll have my 60-day stats up by the end of the week. Dang I'm gonna miss P90X!

P90X day 50 and 51/90; diet: EXCELLENT

So yesterday was day 50 of P90X. Yoga was scheduled, however I switched it out for 2 sessions of Stretch X. I went to the gym in the evening and did some HIIT then came home to Stretch. I absolutely love how it makes my body feel... wish I had discovered this a long time ago.

Today was day 51 and Core Synergistic will be done when I get home, no matter what my workout is at the gym. Today is my first session with my PT so I don't know what's on the agenda but I know we're going over nutrition (my PT is a dietitian) and some stretches but don't know what else. I think this being the first time, he'll probably walk me around and introduce me to all the machines - both cardio and weight resistance. I can't wait!!

Now on to the diet part of today. My PT had me print out 2 weeks worth of food journaling and I was shocked. I log, weigh, and measure all my food religiously and I'm usually in the calorie range I should be in, but looking at the days lined up one after the other for two weeks was a huge eye opener. In two weeks, I had eaten FOUR cheat meals! FOUR!!!!!! That's how much I'm allowed in a month! I guess because I log my food, I feel like if I'm over on fat today, I'll eat less tomorrow, but then I forget the next day and just eat crappy again. But seriously seeing my logs and charts lined up together really put things into perspective. So today, I rated my diet as "excellent" because it was! I had my Shakeology for breakfast with 1 cup of oj, flaxseeds, wheat germ, and 1 cup of strawberries and kiwi. My mid-morning snack was a P90X protein bar and 1 cup of fresh blueberries. Lunch was 1/2 cup oatmeal with a little stevia, cinnamon, flaxseeds and wheat germ, 2 cups of romaine with basalmic vinegar and a little olive oil, and 3.5 oz of grilled salmon. Mid-afternoon snack was 1 cup of cantalope, 1 kiwi, and a slice of whole wheat, fiber bread. And dinner will be 5 oz grilled chicken cooked with tomato, a little lemon, 2 cups of romaine and half a sweet potato. (I know that looks like a lot of fruit but the cantaloupe is over ripe so I'm trying to eat it before it goes bad.)

This is probably the cleanest I've eaten in a really long time. So glad I took a look at my journal... need to add that to my list of daily things to do to keep me on track. Or I'll just create a challenge for myself to see how many days in a row I can eat clean. We'll see.

Speaking of challenges... I totally have not given an update on the Ice Cream Challenge! If I calculate it correctly, this is day 37 of being ICE CREAM F-R-E-E!!! Awesome!

And the results are in...

... and I'm fat! But I knew that! Yesterday I had my consultation at my gym and it took about an hour. I really liked the trainer I was paired up with because he's also a dietitian (which is why the gym gave me a "he" instead of a "she" like I asked) . We went over my current diet and exercise routine and then did the body fat testing. It was a four-spot caliper reading and it came out to 37%. Yup... you read that right! But I wasn't expecting anything lower so I'm okay with it.

Anyway, after doing the calculations, he figured out that if I kept the lean muscle I have now without gaining any muscle, but only lost body fat, I would be at 19% body fat at my goal weight of 120. THAT'S LEAN, BABY! Back in high school, all 8 years ago, no way was I ever that lean. I weighed 115 - 120 lbs. in h.s. but I still had the fat on me. I can't wait to see what my "new" body will look like when I get there.

So 37% body fat... that means I have:
51.8 lbs. of fat and 88.2 lbs. of everything else

51.8 lbs. of fat is a huge amount! I don't even want to know how many pounds it was before I lost weight and started weight lifting. That really put things in perspective. I can't wait to get started taking advantage of everything the gym has to offer!

UPDATE TO THIS POST: I have a personal trainer for 20 sessions starting tomorrow! This may interfere with P90X a little but my trainer knows that I'm doing the program so he wants me to bring in the fitness guide and see if we can work something out as far tailoring my workouts to follow P90X. I didn't want to give up P90X completely but I really wanted to take advantage of the first-time-gym-member personal trainer fees. I wanted to get a trainer to learn proper form for weight lifting to avoid injury and get the most benefit out of lifting. I can't wait to start!

P90X Day 45, 46, 47, 48, and 49/90

Busy weekend again. I had a funeral, three family dinners, and an inurnment to attend this weekend which is why I've been MIA. Still got in my exercise though! And... I joined a gym (I'll write about that in the next blog).

P90X day 45/90: 2-hour hike, Back and Biceps, and ARX

P90X day 46/90: Kenpo 90 mins of various cardio at the gym

P90X day 47/90: HIIT, Legs and Back, and ARX

P90X day 48/90: 2 hours at the gym (cardio and weights)

P90X day 49/90: REST!!!!!

My diet has still been pretty junk, but nothing like how I used to eat 8 months ago. This week I got back on track and have been doing really good since. Hope I can keep it up! Day-60 measurments of P90X is coming up next week so need to brink it!

P90X Day 41, 42, 43, 44/90

Busy, busy week for me! Summer time is the busiest time of year for me as far as work goes, so it's starting... but that's even more reason to make sure I get my workout in to "relax" me.

P90X day 41/90: hike and walk in the AM, HIIT in the PM
I took off on Tuesday and made it an extra long weekend for me so my boyfriend, Anthony, and I went out hiking. It was a pretty short hike but still gets your HR up big time. The hike is basically "stairs" going up the side of a mountain. Well it's actually an old railroad track but the steps are huge and gives your legs and glutes a good workout too. Went walking for an hour after the hike as a cooldown, then later that night I did my HIIT by running/walking the stairs in my apartment. 20 floors up only takes about 2 minutes!

P90X day 42/90: Rest day
Wanted to do Stretch X today but Anthony and I decided to start acting like it's summer so we hit the bbq grill downstairs in our building. We made kabobs and they were so good! Mushrooms, onions, zuccini, and lean steak.

P90X day 43/90: Chest, Shoulders, and Tris and ARX
Only got half-way through Chest, Shoulders and Tris because my elbow started to give me problems again. Once I start doing any overhead tricep work, my right elbos goes sore and tweaky. But yesterday it was pretty bad because it affected the way I did push ups too. Still pushed play on ARX. Think I need to lower the weights I'm using or need to check out some elbow braces.

P90X day 44/90: Plyo P90 Master Series Cardio Intervals and HIIT
Got my hands on some of the P90 Master Series dvd's so wanted to give the Cardio Interval workout a try. Really liked it, but after doing P90X, I think it's a step down in intensity but it was a nice change of pace. Tony looks so young!

Tomorrow is day 45!!! Halfway through P90X... I can't believe it. I think the 3-week phases with a 1-week recovery week makes the time go by so fast. Anyway, I'm no where near where I thought I'd be but no problem... still gonna bring it... even if that means doing two or three more rounds to get there.

Playing catch up... AGAIN! But still bringing it!!

Well, I've got my motivation back! :)

Saturday I weighed in at 139.6!!! I actually broke into the 130's!!!! This is exactly what I needed to get me inspired again and I can't wait to start really brining it... diet wise and exercise wise.

I tried to get confirmation weigh-in's yesterday and today... but...

I forgot to jump on the scale yesterday morning so missed getting the confirmation weigh-in, and then last night the boyfriend and I went out to Chessecake Factory for a 3-year-and-2-month anniversary. Okay that's a lame excuse. We just went out for dinner for no real reason other than we wanted to eat there. I've been really active this weekend getting several hikes in as well as doing P90X so this was definitely my cheat meal of the week (I need to go back and read through my week to make sure I'm not having more than one cheat meal).

Anyway, with a night of beer, fried calamari, pasta, pizza, and cheesecake, there was no way I was going to keep that scale in the 130's but I managed to still pull a 140.8 this morning.

Since I took off of work tomorrow (LONG WEEKEND!) we're doing two hikes, spending the day at the beach then going to try and get a run in during the afternoon. This coming Friday is an official weigh-in for me so I'm hoping to bring my weight back down to the new decade of 130's!

I was hoping to be at or close to my goal weight of 120 by the end of summer, but since I switched up my exercise to P90X and cut a lot of cardio out, the weight-loss has slowed down quite a bit. I've started doing cardio in the mornings 5x a week again so I'm hoping that moves the scale even more. But looking at how far I've come since I started all 176+ pounds ago, this journey has been amazing! Even if it's taking a little longer than I planned, I couldn't be happier with what I'm doing with my life and where I am now.

Keep on keeping on...

P90X day 36/90: Chest, Shoulders and Tris and ARX
Still one of my favorite days! The only complaint I have is that I wish there was more shoulder work. But I love working my triceps!

P90X day 37/90: Plyo

P90X day 38/90: 2-hour walk on the beach, Back and Biceps and ARX
My boyfriend and I are working on building a frame for our doorway so I can finally get my pull-up bar set up! I'm hoping when I start week 7 this week Thursday, I'll have it up.

P90X day 39/90: Yoga X Hour hike and Stretch X
Was feeling really tired yesterday so I decided to take it a little easier and threw in Stretch X instead of Yoga. Love how Stretch X makes me feel!!

P90X day 40/90: Legs and Back, and ARX
Legs a little tight from the hike yesterday but boy did they feel good after this awesome workout! And ARX is getting better!!! I try to make it a point to at least match or increase the number of reps for each exercise that I did the previous time. So far I'm still on track!
