So after doing the hike this weekend, my legs have been so sore! Haven't been able to get in a good exercise yet, but today I'm gonna jump on the elliptical and see what happens.

I need to do something because I can feel the fat growing! :(

Okay, so I finally made it back to the "Stairmaster from Hell" today and I conquered it! This morning I was all ready to go and kick it's butt, but when we started, I pushed myself too hard again and got sick again (see post above with picture)! Well I wasn't about to give up so we just took a 10 minute break and then we headed up again. The views were spectacular and I only wish it wasn't cloudy. Here are some picts (I don't know how to load more than one pict in a post so bare with my several next posts):

This is at the bottom of the hike looking up.
So this picture is from 3/5 of the way up, looking down back at the trail. There was still more stairs in front of us. The baseball fields in the background is the start of the trail.

Ahh.... finally to the top! This is a picture of the other side of the mountain. Look how rainy and junk the weather is!

And this is a picture of the side of the mountain that we started from. I thought it was so cool how one side of the mountain was pouring rain and the other side looked like perfect beach weather!

Well I thought too soon because literally minutes after I took the picture, it started pouring on us! But it was only a passing shower so nothing too major.

And this last shot was of the ridge of the mountain right in front of us with the ocean in the background. I love nature so I took a picture!

And here is a pict of me! So NOT flattering but it's even more motivation for me to get back in shape.

The first shot is back in September at a family gathering and the second shot is from last week. I hate it...

First photo: weight about 177 (before I started MFD)
Second photo: weight about 159

I can't see a difference of almost 20 pounds! :( But I got a little tanner from all the hiking!

Some updates and weigh-in:

I tried to go running again this past Wednesday, however my shin splints have flared up and it doesn't look like their going away any time soon. I've had them all my life since I played sports in high school, so I kind of knew they were going to return. My run turned into a brisk walk, but even then I was hurting. This was my third time running but I think I may have over done it this time. I iced it and have been massaging it daily since I started training last week but it looks like I'm going to be staying away from running till next year. Hopefully three weeks is enough for it to heal and I can start wrapping up my shins for runs to prevent it from coming back.

Other than that, everything on my side is great. Weighing in at 158.9 today! Finally reached the 150's! And better yet, I'm only 0.1 pounds away from being down 10% of my starting body weight... YEA! :) From what I've been reading losing a minimum of 10% of weight starts decreasing your chances of health problems. Sounds good to me!

December 10, 2008
So I've been MIA this weekend because of holiday stuff... finishing up shopping... planning a big Christmas Day dinner with a lot of my family... and just plain catching up on some R and R because this time of year is crazy! So thought I would update my Personal Story page when I had the chance so here I go:

As I posted last week Friday, my weigh-in was 160.8! Something I was very proud of because I can't believe I'm losing weight during the holidays (well, I hope I didn't just jinx myself... holidays are only a third over!) and I'm almost in the 150's!!!! :) The last time I was in the 150's was well over several years ago back in the 2002's and 2003's. YEA! Well, cut to today and my weigh-in is... 159.2! 140's here I come!

I also discovered something else this morning... I can fit into my old size 10 jeans! Now these aren't jeans that I wore before so I know they haven't been stretched out by my big butt yet... this are brand new size 10 jeans!! I can't believe MFD is working so well for me. Everyday I try to find something I notice has changed since I started this new lifestyle and it's such a good form of motivation for me! For example, this weekend I'm going through ALL my clothes and trying on everything! Tossing the things that are too big and rewearing the things that were too small for me to comfortably fit recently! I'll be taking some pictures and posting them when I have a chance.

Another thing I've noticed is the improvement in my exercise intensity and level. There is one hike that my boyfriend and I love to do which is the Diamond Head Hike (anyone who's visited Oahu probably has done this). It's not particularly hard, but there is a section of 100 steps going straight up that will take the wind out of you. Well I remember we did it when I first started MFD and I was so out of shape and we hiked up so quickly that I was light-headed and extremely nauseous. Well fast-forward to this Sunday... we flew up the mountain, passing any person who was in front of us (something you're not suppose to do on this trail but I can't let anyone hold me back) and climbed those stairs non-stop. It felt so good to be able to do that! Our goal is to be able to eventually run the entire trail.

Well this past Saturday we went hiking on a different trail too... seriously the stair master from hell (see the picture). It's an almost mile-long old railroad going up a mountain almost the same height. And the entire trail is made of stairs! It's a fairly intense hike, especially for someone like me who is prone to shin splints but let me tell you, you won't have to ever worry about your quads, hamstrings, or glutes if you do this hike every week! So anyway, my boyfriend and I went with our friends and our dogs but my friends got held up so we didn't start the hike until about 12:30... the hottest time of day on one of the hottest sides of the island. Anyway everything is going good, but halfway up the mountain I feel like I'm going to collapse and throw up... the heat was so crazy that a few of us had to stop and rest before we passed out - and did I mention that when we first got there, there were ambulance crews and fire fighters already there because someone did pass out on the trail?! So at least help was there in case I needed it. :) We all decided to head back down because it was just way too hot and the dogs were not going to make it at all.

I'm going back this weekend to conquer it but we're starting at 8:30 in the morning so there's no excuses this time!

So I did my first actually "run" last night (yes, at like 10:00) after a Christmas party I had. I had no idea what to expect since it's been years since I ran, but I got out there with my boyfriend and we did about 4 miles at a walk/run pace. It was surprisingly good and I really enjoyed it. Today my knees are a little tight but they're not sore. This was my biggest fear... having my joints get used to carrying my pounding weight when I ran... so I'm happy with how I feel today. We were out for almost an hour and a half which was WAY too long. We were only suppose to train for about an hour, but time went by so fast we didn't even realize what time it was till we decided to head back home.

We ended up coming home around 11:15 and my security/doorman thought we were crazy... exercising at 11:00 at night! I told him we were training for a 13K in February and that was the only time I had yesterday to get in a run and he said, "Wow, you're a lot more determined and dedicated then a lot of other people I know who exercise". That made me feel so good!

Let's just hope I can keep it up!

Forgot to post my weigh-in last Friday, Nov. 28.

Well I weighed in at 163.0 on Nov. 26, the day before Thanksgiving and I promised myself that I was going to be brave and make myself jump on the scale the day after Thanksgiving also, which was Friday. Now I know the weight-gain from one day won't be seen the next morning, but I still didn't know what to expect. Well I jumped on the scale Friday morning and I was down at 162.3!!:) Thanksgiving was really good to me this year (see previous post).

And I'm happy to say that this week I'm still hovering around 162 so I'm still on track! YEA!

Well Thanksgiving is over and past, so thought I would reflect on my first holiday weekend (still have Christmas and New Year's!) w/ MFD:

As the end of November approached, I was a little worried about how I would handle Thanksgiving. Though turkey was never my favorite, it's the starches that are my weakness... garlic mashed potatoes, buttery brown sugar-glazed yams, stuffing, gravy, pumpkin and custard pie! THESE are the things that got me! For the past several years, my family has been going out for Thanksgiving so it was easy for me to order something other than the traditional Thanksgiving food, but this year I bought my first condo, so my realtor bought me an entire Turkey-to-go meal... one whole turkey with ALL THE TRIMMINGS!! In anticipation of Thanksgiving, I have been working out extra hard the week before and especially the day of. My boyfriend and I got up early on Thanksgiving day and went on a grueling 2 hour hike straight up a mountain (literally climbing up with your hands in some spots) but a great workout, nonetheless. Thanksgiving this year was lunch so I really think that helped with my portion control... I'm a dinner person. But anyway, lunch was great! I did so well and really only ate till I was full, not stuffed. Had a very small serving of stuffing, yams, and mashed potatoes and loaded up my plate with fresh greens and turkey. After lunch, we did another hike, but this time my parents came along also so it was really nice to have everyone go together. When we got done with the hike, 2 hours later, we all had pumpkin pie. It was the Thanksgiving that I've eaten the healthiest and the least amount of food... very refreshing! :)

Now some other updates:

Today I signed up for my first 13K run/walk! My dad is an avid runner and at Thanksgiving lunch, the topic of running came up and he reminded me that one of Hawaii's most popular run, the Great Aloha Run (GAR), is taking place in February. Well I thought about it this weekend and decided to sign up and do it. Even if I have to walk the entire thing, at least I can say I crossed the finish line! :) I do a lot of cardio in my daily routine and walk a lot so I'm hoping I don't have to start from scratch to train for running. I've looked up several good programs to get me started, like the Learn to Run program, and although I only have about 11 weeks before the GAR, I think I can make great progress if I stay on schedule with training. Of course, my ever-supportive boyfriend signed up with me and is going to train with me so having a buddy always makes a big difference. Can't thank him enough for all he's doing... putting up with my experimental "healthy" cooking, filling our condo with exercise machines, listening to me complain/talk about my weight, etc. Really couldn't have done it without his support... maybe I need to tell him that instead of writing it here. Anyway, I'll be sure to update my progress on running.

That's all for now!
:)

Okay, goals for the week:

Thursday I didn't make the goal of eating a serving of fruit/veggie with every meal... I didn't have anything with dinner, and I forgot to do my push ups. So Thursday is out.

Friday I did a lot better and met all my goals:
- maintained my weight this week... 161.6! :)
- got in92 minutes of exercise... went on a hike this morning
- had a banana with breakfast, an orange with lunch, and a spinach salad with dinner
- did my set of push ups!

So far I'm 4 out of 5 days! :) Still pretty good in my book!

Yesterday's goals:

- exercise - took my day off yesterday, but I'm allowed one day off, so still on track!
- had a tangerine with breakfast, 3 oz of carrots with lunch, and 2.5 cups of spinach with dinner - made my fruit and veggie goal!
- did my 3 sets of 15 push-ups also - and tried out a military style push up and I was able to crank out 6!! I didn't even know I could do them until I tried!! YEA FOR ME!! That's how I'll be doing them from now on :)

So I'm doing a weigh-in today... the day before Turkey Day... and then again on Friday which is my normal weigh-in day.

Drum roll please...

163.0

It's down more than two pounds from last Friday's weigh-in (which is GREAT) but about the same as the previous Friday, the 14th. But that's no biggie! :) I'm just happy to see the scale move down again.

Reached goal today...

- weighing in at 163.0 as of this morning
- exercised a total of 72 minutes: elliptical and circuit training
- had an apple with breakfast, 3 oz. of carrots with lunch, and 1.5 cups of broccoli with dinner
- did my set of push-ups during my circuit training

So that makes 3 days for 3 days that I've made my goal.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Have to find the silver lining in everything when it comes to weight loss. I've actually noticed that I see the good in most bad situations since I started up MFD.

Again, this isn't my first time trying a diet or "new lifestyle", but I think my mind, body, and heart are really in it this time. I've found exercising and eating healthy not a problem so far, and I actually look forward to it! I've also noticed a big change in my attitude. Before MFD, I didn't think I was unhappy, but I didn't know I was unhappy. Not just with my body, but with my life.

Since exercising and giving my body what it needs, my whole attitude seemed to have change. Yes, I know it's a really short time considering I've only been on MFD for a little over two months, but I can really see it! :) I don't stress about things too much now and I'm a lot happier person to be around (so much so my boyfriend even said how much I've changed).

So far I'm loving this new lifestyle!

Yesterday I kept all my goals! (Well as far as maintaining my weight, I'll weigh in on Friday for the weekly goal.)

- Yesterday I got in about an hour of kick boxing and the elliptical so I made the exercise goal.
- I had an apple with breakfast, 3 oz. of carrots with lunch, and I had a big spinach salad with crumbled tofu, salmon, and pumpkin seeds for dinner.
- And I did three sets of 15 push-ups last night (on my knees) - I want to be able to do at least 10 push-ups military style by the end of the year!

YEA for keeping with my goals for day one!

November 24, 2008
So after the mysterious 2 pound gain last week, I got frustrated! I never thought of quitting at all, but I'm glad it happened because it was actually a great form of motivation for me. :)

I kept up with the exercise (and maybe did a little extra to try and make up for the weight) and I continued to eat right throughout last week and this weekend.

Weigh-in this morning was at 163.8, so I'm just hoping the gain last week was because of TOM.

Anyway, this weekend was a really good weekend for me. Got up early on Saturday to go hiking, but it was pouring rain with thunder all day so instead I spent my time indoors. I went out to lunch with my parents and got to check out a local farmer's market (which is indoors) that I've never been to. That night I got in a good cardio workout while I was watching TV. When I first started MFD, I made it a point to NEVER turn on the TV unless I was going to workout for the first half an hour of it being on and this has really helped me keep on track. I am a huge reality show junkie so there's usually a different show on at least four times a week. So whenever I want to watch a show I make sure I get on my elliptical and go for AT LEAST 30 minutes. Great form of motivation!

Yesterday was a really good day too. The weather really cleared up but my boyfriend works during the day on Sundays so I couldn't go hiking. Instead I took my dog for a well needed walk down to the beach which is about a mile away. Later in the afternoon, I did Jillian Michaels' cardio kick-boxing, which I love! I haven't done if for over three weeks so today my legs are a little sore... but it burns so good! :)

This week I'm going to turn up the exercise just a bit in anticipation of Thanksgiving. I don't plan to eat a lot, but I know the calories will still add up.

My goals for this week:

:) at least maintain my weight around 163... if I can lose any, that's even better
:) exercise for at least 45 minutes 6 out of the 7 days left this month
-exercise must consist of cardio (kick boxing, tae bo, or elliptical), aerobics, weight training, and circuit training
:) have a serving of fruit or vegetable with EVERY meal
:) do push-ups EVERYDAY this week

I'll update my progress everyday or two...

Setting these little goals make a HUGE difference for me. I always make sure I have my overall goal in mind, but I break it up and turn them into weekly or monthly mini goals. It makes the goal a lot more attainable when you do it this way.

:(

Frustrated! That's how I feel. I started MFD about 2 months ago and did so well with everything... eating... exercising... logging, etc.

I've kept it up and have consistently lost about 1.25 a week since I started, bringing my weight down to 163.4 from 176.4. The 163.4 weigh-in was for this past Friday, Nov. 14.

Anyway, this weekend and up until today I've been up about 2 pounds!!

This weekend I was weighing in at almost 166, but I thought it was a "bad day" because I did have a pretty salty dinner the night before. Well I weighed myself on Monday and today, and the weigh-ins are 165.4 and 165.0 respectively. I don't understand the sudden 2 pound jump! There is no way I ate 3500 extra calories last week (actually it would 7000 extra calories for a 2 pound increase) but I don't know what's going on and it's a little frustrating! The only difference I can think of is my exercise pattern... last week I went on a couple of 600+ calorie-burning hikes but that's it. I also started weight training the other week, but I KNOW the 2 pound increase is not muscle... bodybuilders even have a hard time gaining 1 pound of muscle a week!!

I'm trying not to get upset about it but it's really hard when I can't figure out what's going on. I know weight loss has many bumps in the road, but I didn't think I was going to hit a bump so soon. I'm still young (25), still big (165.00 lbs) for my 5-foot frame, so I should be able to lose the weight no problem, like I have been doing since I started MFD. My boyfriend thought it was because of TOM, but that's not for another week and a half and TOM usually doesn't affect me weight-wise.

Maybe my body is changing because of this new "lifestyle" and exercise? I know when I first started MFD, my TOM was extremely out of whack! So much so I went in to see my OBGYN but she said it shouldn't be anything to worry about since I am changing up the way my body has been running for years.

Anyway, my weigh-in days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so hopefully this week is a fluke (doubt it!) or at least I hope to start losing consistently again. The weird weigh-ins this week have pushed back my short-term weight goals for this year, but not by too much.

Just needed to vent...

Still ate healthy, but everything I ate last night was loaded with salt... hoping the weight is just water weight. I'll weigh-in tomorrow to see if the scale has moved down at all.

Weigh-in this morning... 164.4! YEAH!!! It was just water weight!

Keep on moving...

MFD entry 4

This post was copied from an entry on My Food Diary (MFD) during my pre-blogging days. Back then, I used the forums on MFD as my daily 'blog'. Just wanted to get my entire journey in one place.

Even if it hasn't, I'll gladly take the 165.2 weigh-in. I did cut back on my cardio this week and actually started to incorporate weight training into my workouts, so that might also be it. Whatever the reason, I'm not too worried about it. I'm still headed in the right direction and that's all that really matters!

Losing weight too fast! :(

I'm averaging about 2.2 pounds a week! And that's with eating back my exercise calories everyday. I usually net around 1200 calories a day, so I don't know what's going on. It shouldn't be a complaint, however I'm a little concerned because I know this isn't "healthy" weight loss.

I've already changed up my workout schedule to reduce my cardio and start doing yoga, so we'll see if that helps. Hope it does because I want to be able to keep this weight off FOR LIFE this time!

CURRENT WEIGHT (10/31/08): 166.4

So today I reached a benchmark... down exactly 10 pounds since I started!
:):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

I'm losing weight a lot faster than I would like, so I've decided to cut back on some exercise and start doing some yoga instead of cardio. I could always use the flexibility!

Thanks everyone, for all of your awesome comments! It means so much to hear that all of you are cheering for me (as I am for each of you!). MFD has been an awesome "lifestyle change" and I'm so glad to have found it. I will keep posting my progress!
