So now what?

Can you believe the holidays are done already?

Thanksgiving... done!
Christmas... done!

New Years... done!

So now what?

I'm not a fan of New Year's resolutions because I don't believe in waiting till the first day of the year to start getting healthy - I believe NOW is the best time - but I realize many people have the 'New Year high'. And there's nothing wrong with that! For me a new year - heck, a new week! - can really get me motivated when it comes to my health and fitness goals.

This month I'm going back to basics and gonna do things the way I used when I first started losing weight: tracking exercise minutes/calories burned per day (see an example here). Of all the goal-settings I've done, this method was proven the most successful for me.

Here are my goals for January:
  • Workout 6 days/week for a total of 27 days out of the 31 days
  • Workout for an average of 60 minutes a day = 1620 minutes
  • Burn an average of 300 calories per workout = 8100 calories
1/01: 463 cals, 96 min brisk walk
1/02: 400 cals, 103 min hike

TOTAL: 863 cals, 199 mins

And remember in December I made a goal of having no goals? Well here's a recap of my December goals:

Not too bad for having no goals! But all the food last month pretty much canceled out the exercise I did so I gained weight... no big surprise. I forgot to post a year-end weight but I weighed in at 141 lbs. on December 31 so I'm ending the year with a total of -16.2 lbs. gone and an overall total of -35.4 lbs. since September of 2008.

Here's to a new (and better) year!

I like the idea of marking the calories burned, and how much you want to burn per workout! Have a great Sunday!

Wow, you are such an inspiration! I think going back to basics is always useful in a journey such as this, because they work best!

Hi, thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm always interested to read blogs written by people with a similiar theory of fitness. I'm a huge believer in regular workouts. I look forward to following your progress!

I really like the idea of "A New Week" goals! I think I am going to use that this year - short term goals are easier to accomplish, which make you more encouraged to meet other goals! Thanks for the inspiration! :)

Glad you found my blog. Thanks for visiting me! You look great!! Can't wait until my pictures look like this. Oh and I love the exercise goals. Especially the part about burning 300 calories per workout. I think I will borrow that goal, LOL! :-)

Having no goals is definitely difficult, because it's so counterintuitive, isn't it?

Our "goal" should be living in this moment, right now... as healthy as possible. If we stray, ok... we stray. Get back on track without judgement, and keep moving FORWARD, focusing on this minute.

I love love love your blog, as it makes us all focus on the moving forward. Keep taking those steps!

Okay 60 minutes per day. I'm in - I'll be posting pictures of my calendar like you are. The online version just isn't as motivating, and as accessible. The one in my kitchen I have to look at all the time, so it's the most "in-your-face" kinda confrontation I need to remind me to exercise.

Thanks for all your help Annie. I really appreciate it. I'm on the "New Year High" and loving it. Hope you have a good January!
